“Our Twelfth Step – carrying the message – is the basic service that the AA Fellowship gives; this is our principal aim and the main reason for our existence. Therefore, AA is more than a set of principles; it is a society of alcoholics in action. We must carry the message, else we ourselves can wither and those who haven’t been given the truth may die.” — Reprinted from The AA Service Manual with permission of AA World Services, Inc.

Public Information/Cooperating with Professional Communities Committee

Like all of AA, the primary purpose of members involved with public information service is to carry the AA message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Working together, members of local Public Information committees provide accurate AA information to the public when requested. P.l. committees visit schools, businesses and community meetings for this purpose. They also serve as resources for our friends in the local media, emphasizing our Traditions of anonymity, singleness of purpose and non-affiliation, as well as offering AA public service announcements to radio and television stations.

CPC: Members of these committees provide information about AA to those who have contact with alcoholics through their profession. This group includes health care professionals, educators, members of the clergy, lawyers, social workers, union leaders, and industrial managers, as well as those working in the field of alcoholism. Information is provided about where we are, what we are, what we can do, and what we cannot do.

Archives Committee

Like any other AA service, the primary purpose of those involved in archival work is to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous. Archives service work is more than mere custodial activity; it is the means by which we collect, preserve and share the rich and meaningful heritage of our Fellowship. It is by the collection and sharing of these important historical elements that our collective gratitude for Alcoholics Anonymous is deepened.

Treatment Facilities Committee

Treatment facilities committees are formed to coordinate the work of individual AA members and groups who are interested in carrying our message of recovery to alcoholics in hospitals and treatment facilities, and to set up means of “bridging the gap” from the facility to an AA group in the individual’s community.

Correctional Facilities Committee

The purpose of a correctional facilities committee is to coordinate the work of individual AA members and groups who are interested in carrying our message of recovery to alcoholics behind the walls, and to set up means of smoothing the way from the facility to the larger AA community through pre-release contacts.

Convention Committee

The purpose of the Convention Committee is to plan and conduct the annual Northeastern Area 84 Convention. The Convention rotates annually and is hosted by Sudbury, North Bay and Sault Ste Marie.

Remote Communities Workgroup

In 2000 the Delegate for Area 84 responded to calls to share the AA Program with our Northern neighbours. Our purpose is to bring the message of hope to suffering men and women who live where roads are seasonal at best and the nearest Intergroup is 800 miles away. In 2003 we, as an Area of Alcoholics Anonymous, unanimously agreed to increase both our financial and personal support to provide to those... that which was so freely given to us.

Grapevine Committee

The purpose of the Grapevine Committee is to educate the membership about our unique “Meeting in Print” and inform Groups and individuals in the Northeastern Area of the many benefits that can be derived through a Grapevine subscription.
